Each winning team will receive a bonus to their final. Again, congrats to all the winners and to all that played. Hopefully, this review game has helped you to focus your studying and provided a little bit of fun along the way. Use some very honest self assessment to help determine what you need to spend time on while studying. Good luck on all your finals!

Survivor: Day 4

|

I imagine there will be a few questions about what happened to Challenge 1. Instead of entering Challenge 3 as a new grade, which would effectively take the average of the two Challenges, I decided to enter Challenge 3 as a retake of Challenge 1. What that means is that you will receive the higher of the two scores. But don't breathe that sigh of relief yet! If you did poorly on a Challenge, you will do poorly on that section of the exam unless you act now to prevent that from happening. That means using your results as a guide directing your studies.

So after 4 days of Survivor, we have the following rankings!
Period 1:
  1. Numa - 27
  2. Team Sleepy (aka Decimos) - 19
  3. Pentanos - 15
  4. Additron - 13.5
  5. Pascalos - 12
  6. Subtractos - 8.4
  7. Quadraticus - 7

Period 3:
  1. Numa - 22
  2. Additron/Quadratics - 20
  3. Pentanos - 16
  4. Decimos - 12.5
  5. Subtracto - 8.5

Period 4(The following students need to email me with what specialization they choose for Challenge 3: Marianna R., Heena J., Iyad A. Until I receive this information, scores cannot be updated):
  1. User Error - 20
  2. Los Madres-Funciones - 11.5
  3. f(x) & Asymptotes - 11
  4. Iyad and the Domains - 9.5

Period 6:
  1. Additron - 28
  2. Quadraticus - 20
  3. Pentanos - 17
  4. Decimos - 15
  5. Numa - 13

  2. Inconsistent Systems of Matrices & Pentanos - 22
  3. Pentanos - 18
  4. Additron - 16.5
  5. The Chinese Proof

Challenge 4

The fourth and final challenge will pit team against team in a single elimination style event. Teams will be seeded by their current standing. Come to class ready to compete head to head to gain points for your team!

Here's the ppt from today. Sorry folks, it's a powerpoint, which means either open office or Word to view it. If anyone is having a serious issue with being unable to open it, we'll see what we can do.

Challenge 3

Challenge 3 will place the burden back on the individuals of the team. Just so there is no confusion here, you will be receiving a personal score in your gradebook for this Challenge, as well as whatever team consequences follow. There will be some team work with the division of labor, which you will choose ahead of time. This Challenge will not be until Wednesday, so there is a lot of time to hone your Chapter 8 skills or to seek help from others. There will be several subtopics from Chapter 8 and each group will need to assign one member of their team to cover each subtopic. This does not mean that each member will only need to answer questions on their subtopic, as off-topic questions will appear (but much less frequently). I will not be more specific on this challenge at this time, so don't ask.

Follow this link for an early start on the Chapter 8 material.

Survivor: Day 2

|

Today marked the end of our first challenge. Teams were scored by their average test score and then points were added to their average based off their place in the relay. You will see your individual test scores on Monday. Use your results to help you focus your studies. If you did poorly you should spend some more time practicing the material from Chapter 6 when you are studying for the final.

Since I am a track and field buff, I will be using track scores to award the teams points. This awards 10 points for first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, 4 for fourth, 3 for fifth, 2 for sixth, and 1 for seventh place.

Period 1:
  1. Numa - 10
  2. Decimos - 8
  3. Pascalos - 6
  4. Subtractos - 4
  5. Quadraticus - 3
  6. Additron - 2
  7. Pentanos - 1

Period 3:
  1. Numa - 10
  2. Additron - 8
  3. Decimos - 6
  4. Subtractos - 4
  5. Pentanos - 3
  6. Quadraticus - 2

Period 4:
  1. User Error - 10
  2. f(x) - 8
  3. Los Madres-Funciones - 6
  4. Iyad and the Domains - 4
  5. Asymptotes - 3

Period 6:
  1. Additron - 10
  2. Quadraticus - 8
  3. Numa - 6
  4. Pentanos - 4
  5. Decimos - 3

Period 7:
  1. Inconsistent Systems of Matrices - 10
  2. The Chinese Proof - 8
  3. Team Epsilon - 6
  4. Pentanos - 4
  5. Additron - 3

Challenge 2

Challenge 2 will be on Monday! This challenge will focus solely on Chapter 7. Expect a larger team competition, but there will still be individual accountability. You will be given a brief time to conference at the beginning of the class and then the challenge will begin and your skills will be put to the test!

Ch. 14 Quest

There seems to be some confusion in this class, so allow me to clear things up. School ends on June 16th. Until that point in time, you should expect to work in my class. These last quiz/test scores were simply atrocious and yet Tuesday, the overwhelming majority of students squandered their time in class, preferring to socialize or entertain themselves in other ways. On Thursday, May 20th, we introduced the Trig Identities and by May 25th, had covered solving trig equations using those identities. That gave each and every one of you four school days to seek help if you didn't understand the work. 4.55% of you did so. It comes as no surprise that those students who did seek out help did better, on average, than those that did not.

Let me reiterate: The type of effort I have seen lately will reap you the type of scores that you see on the Chapter 14 Quest. If you are unhappy with those results, change your study/work habits. The final will account for 10% of your grade and during the review, we will see a few additional grades. For some of you, your performance here will be the difference between passing and failing. For the rest, your performance has the ability to impact your grade in a noticeable way (positively or negatively). I highly suggest that you re-evaluate your effort in this class and your desire to achieve the grade you think you deserve.

You will need your homework in class tomorrow. Spread the word to your friends and neighbors.

Algebra/Trig Semester Review

|

We will be doing our review in a non-conventional way. You have been split up into teams and will be competing against each other in a series of challenges that offer both personal and team rewards.

Algebra Survivor!1

You need to read and familiarize yourself with the rules of the game.

Your assignment for Wednesday night is to review your notes on Chapter 6 and read through chapter 6 in the book. You will have your first challenge on Friday and will need to be prepared. Challenges will come faster towards the end of the week so you will need to stay on top of material.
