Summer Programs at University of Chicago

There are two summer programs at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine that are now accepting applications: the Young Scientist Training Program (YSTP) and the Chicago Academic Medicine Program (CAMP).

Young Scientist Training Program

YSTP is for science oriented high school students of promise who wish to gain laboratory experience. YSTP is an excellent 10-week summer program designed for up to 10 high achieving students from groups, that have been shown to be underrepresented (African American or Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian) in the health related sciences or who self describe from disadvantaged backgrounds. This program will help students to gain experience in biomedical research and career development.This year's program dates are June 19 through August 21, 2012 and the program will again be held on The University of Chicago campus. The application deadline is Monday, March 12, 2012.Students will commute to campus and work in the laboratories of UC faculty, where they will learn to do basic or clinical research in the one of the following areas: Diabetes, endocrinology, nutrition, obesity, digestive, liver, urologic, kidney or blood disorders or in the area of the ethical conduct of research. Participants will attend a weekly research colloquium where they will learn techniques of scientific analysis from UC faculty and medical school students.Program participants will receive a stipend of $1500, enjoy free tuition and an all expense paid trip to the national symposium at the end of the program.

Chicago Academic Medicine Program

CAMP is for outstanding high school seniors who will graduate in the spring of 2012 and who have been accepted into college. This program was developed to help college students from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health related sciences (African American or Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian) or students who self-describe from disadvantaged backgrounds to build the knowledge base and academic skills necessary for success in a pre-medical program. This year's program dates are June 18 through July 27, 2012 and the program will again be held on The University of Chicago campus. The application deadline is Monday, March 5, 2012.CAMP is a non-residential, six week academic skills building program that is tuition free. Participants will receive a $1000 stipend and Chicago Transit Authority bus passes to defray in-town transportation expenses associated with the program.

All fractional exponents in denominators need to be rationalized (as they are really radicals, just cleverly disguised). Bring any and all questions to class tomorrow. We will review this worksheet before going on to section 6.3. Do not expect me to cover every problem. Your questions should be about specific steps, not "How do I do number ___".

Given the lackluster performance on today's homework check, I will be instituting a new policy:

Assessment corrections will be offered to students carrying an 80% or higher on the homework checks. These assessment corrections will allow the student to recover 25% of the missed points and must be submitted the day after an assessment is returned. No late submissions will be accepted. This covers both tests and quizzes but excludes midterms and memorization quizzes.

This policy will take effect in the new semester. You will be starting with a new homework grade, so your past performances will not be taken into account. Homework checks will continue to be for correctness. The first homework check of the new semester will cover through homework #45. Be prepared.

Stanford Online Course

I put a post up previously about these cool classes offered online by Stanford University for free. I just received the go ahead to require each of you to take ONE of the classes. Some classes start January 23rd so you'll need to choose quickly or you might miss out on the one you want to take. Make sure to read the class description. Some of these classes require some prerequisite knowledge, so you'll want to make sure that you've covered your bases.

This course will compose your Science Fair grade for the second semester (plus any other science fair work we might do). Remember, that's 10% of your grade, so you will need to put some effort in. I'm waiting to hear back from the Stanford staff about how the classes are graded before I will be able to give specifics about how I will be grading you.

Pre-Holiday Break Quiz-O-Rama!

It's the spectacular, magnificent, opulent, tremendous, Quiz-O-Rama!!! This event will be taking place on Friday, December 23^rd!

In Advanced Algebra with Trig:

The quiz will cover solving polynomials. This means sections 5.5 - 5.7. Given the shortened period, there will only be three polynomials on the test. That means you'll have about 8 minutes per question. Practice under these time constraints.

In Precalculus

The quiz will cover working with logarithms and exponents. This is 3.1-3.5. The focus will be on 3.4/3.5. Given the shortened period, there will be no graphs this time. I'm sure you're heartbroken - no tears please. Focus your studies on assignments 37 and 38, along with the worksheet from Tuesday.

If you're not going to be here on Friday, please try to schedule your make-up before break. I'll be here Thursday after school and you can take it then. Historically, the grades after break are not as good.

Tomorrow is the Science Fair and I hope you're as excited as I am! I wanted to remind you of a few things going into the Science Fair:

You must stay by your board at all times. Even if you've been judged three times, wait by your board until you are dismissed. You will be penalized for leaving your board and we are watching......
Dress professionally! No jeans, even nice ones. If you have a wardrobe issue, please contact one of your Alpha teachers to discuss it.
Practice your presentation tonight. Have your parents, guardians, brothers, sisters, homeless guy off the street (ok not that one) listen to your presentation and ask you a few questions. Practice makes perfect - or better.
Get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast in the morning. You may not get to go to lunch until after noon and there are no snack breaks.

Ignore problem 5. This problem was typed incorrectly. You should, instead, be able to work with quadratic inequalities and systems of quadratic inequalities, much like what was on the Graphing Quiz.

Tomorrow, we will be having a binder check. This will include all homework up to our latest assignment.

Also due tomorrow are the Ch. 4 Graphing Quiz corrections. They must be completed on a separate sheet of paper and contain a grammatically sound written explanation as to why the problem was missed in the first place. This does not mean "tell me what was wrong". Tell me what was wrong with the process you used.

There will be no calculators allowed on tomorrow's test. Be prepared to graph and calculate by hand. All answers should be left in fraction form (not decimal) and radicals should be simplified.

Precalculus Retake

Allow me first to apologize for the difficulty of this quiz. I clearly had not recovered from the effects of the cold medicine I had been taking because:

1b had no rational zeros making it impossible to do using our methods
2 was simply incredibly difficult given that neither polynomial had any rational factors and required the use of the quadratic equation in both cases (making factoring incredibly difficult

Given the upfront difficulty of this quiz, along with the fact that I haven't been there all week, I will be treating this as a "practice quiz". We will have the real deal on Tuesday. Same number of questions, same types of questions, appropriate difficulty.

I will return the "practice quiz" on Monday and take questions at the end of the period. There will also be tutoring after school on Monday, Room 351, 9^th period.

Having recently looked over your homework, I can say with certainty that I will need to see more detail than the average student is providing for full credit. Answers gleaned from the graphs of functions must be supported by algebra on your paper.

Classroom Observers & Lecture Participation

We might be having a few classroom visitors in the near future so I wanted to remind everyone of a few school-wide policies that might show up.

ID's must be worn at all times. I know the green is incredibly fashionable, but please keep your ID on and displayed.
No food or drink in the classroom. Please keep all drinks and food away during class. Water is the only exception.
Participation during lecture and practice time. This is rapidly becoming a pet peeve of mine, as I feel that much of the time I give you during lecture to practice is being wasted.
Be on time - I'm looking at you second period.

It is especially important as the material gets harder that you ask questions and try problems in class. Math is not a spectator sport, it's a practice sport. To improve, you have to practice, make mistakes, and learn from the mistakes. The guided practice in class is an excellent first chance to try your hand at the new skills we are developing. Taking an active role in lectures and problem solving will give you more ownership of the material and you'll find that you develop your skills faster.

Book Reminder

You will need your book in class every day. I will begin deducting points from participation if you waste the time given in class to begin homework. Practicing the material we learn (especially right away) is one of the best ways to reinforce the new neural pathways that you are building in the class. In many cases, you should be able to finish the majority of your work in the time I give you. Additionally, you can always ask me questions if you are struggling with the work in class.

If the time at the end of class continues to be misused, I will have no choice but to fill that time with additional practice to be turned in at the conclusion of class.

In unrelated news - Video speed lectures will be returning. I will be posting the videos to my youtube channel. You can review the lecture or see it if you missed it. Keep in mind, this is time compressed, so there is no sound and you might need to pause the video to have time to work on the problems.

Graphing Calculators Tomorrow

This is just a reminder that Precalculus students will need their graphing calculators tomorrow in class. We will be focusing mainly on manipulating the graph screen. If you don't have one yet, borrow a friends for this class. You will need to be able to perform the operations that we learn tomorrow.

Still Need a TI?

Many stores sell new TI's, including Target and Walmart. You may also want to consider buying a used variant on ebay.

Here's a search for acceptable TI models within this class. While I recommend the TI-84 Plus Silver, an 83 or 83+ would be sufficient for this class.

You will notice that below this blog, there is a school calendars. Below the calendar is a list of downloadable files that I have uploaded for the class. I will post links to all relevant downloads in the blog for your convenience.

Below are some of the most important items you will need for the upcoming school year.

Create a new Student Account:
Click here.
Enter your birthday using the drop-down menus and click continue.
Fill in all of the required information. You must use a valid email or you will be unable to activate your account.
Congratulations! Once you click Create Account and everything is verified, you only need to add your specific book.

To access your Online book after setting up your Student Account:
Select your Subject - Math (High School)
Select your State - IL (you can click it too!)
Click Go
Select the Algebra 2 2007 book
Fill in the Activation Code, given above

A Little Weekend Humor and some Physics help

Physics - When you have a current that divides into two parallel resistors R1 and R2, then the current through R1 = Itotal * R2/(R1+R2) and the current through R2 = Itotal*R1/(R1+R2). In other words the current through one resistor is the total current times the ratio of the other resistance to the total resistance.

Here's a little reading on the Collatz Conjecture. This is one of the many "unsolved" problems floating around in math. It's more of a game than anything, but has some interesting implications about prime factorization etc. One could make quite a name for him/herself if one were to prove this to be either true or false.

This conjecture can be used to create a fractal, giving the following picture:
