SSS and SAS Postulates

|

The following document should be copied into your notebook as our notes for the day (section 4.4).  You should do your best to answer the questions that are asked using the provided examples as a guide.

Once you have copied down the notes, you may begin working on this worksheet.

I will be looking for completed notes tomorrow.

Also tomorrow is a homework check on assignments 19-21 and a quiz on sections 4.1-4.3.

Proving Triangles Congruent by Definition

|

You can access the proof prompts here.

Remember, you need to copy the givens, figure, and what you are trying to prove onto your paper before you complete the proof.  These are part of the proof.

Tomorrow, instead of collecting this work, I will randomly select one of the 4 proofs and ask you to complete it in class.  I am available before school if you have any questions about the proofs.

Review Solutions

Quiz Reminder!

|

This is just a friendly reminder that we have our 3.1-3.2 quiz tomorrow.

Looking over the homework and reviewing notes is an excellent way to prepare.  Reworking old problems that you have solved can be helpful too, since you can compare your solution to past work.

See you all tomorrow!

Friday's Work & Solutions to Homework

|

Here are the solutions to the homework from Friday.  If you missed class, you can download a clean version to work on here.  We also covered a few ways to prove two lines are parallel.  Check this out for a quick catch-up.

Also, remember that we have a quiz on Monday covering the material from 3.1-3.2.  This worksheet and the work we did on Thursday are a good representation of the types of problems that you might see.  It would also be good to review assignments 15 and 16.

Transversal Activity

|

Here is the template I mentioned in class (1st period).

You need to fill out the relationship and angle pair formed for each pair of angles.  You should have this template completed for tomorrow and be prepared to discuss your discoveries.  As you are filling out the template, here are some things to keep in mind.

Relationships could be: None, Supplementary, Complementary, Congruent

Angle Pairs Formed could be: Vertical Angles, Linear Pair, Corresponding Angles, Alternate-Interior Angles, Alternate-Exterior Angles, Same-Side Interior Angles, Same-Side Exterior Angles.

You should be able to complete the following sentences:

  • ALL corresponding angles are . . .
  • ALL alternate interior angles are . . .
  • ALL alternate exterior angles are . . .
  • ALL same-side interior angles are . . .
  • ALL same-side exterior angles are . . .
  • ALL vertical angles are . . .

There is also an assignment from the book which you should try:

Assignment 16: pg. 158 #7-19 odd, 23-27 odd, 30, 31, 33, 39*

*Make sure that you have tried to set up number 39 and solve it.  We will be discussing it tomorrow.

Chapter 2 Review Solutions - Day 1

Quarter Review Information

|

Here is the practice exam that we worked on in class.

You can find solutions to the practice exam here.

This sheet might help you decide where to focus your studying!

Solutions to the book review can be found here!

If you were wondering about the proof from yesterday, here's my version!

Geometric Proofs

|

You can access the proofs for today here.  You should attempt to complete as many of the proofs 2-8 as possible on a separate sheet and submit it by the end of the period.

Angle Proofs Solutions

|

Tonight, you should try to complete the classwork proofs before you start on the homework.  You can check out solutions to the classwork proofs here.  Tomorrow we will go over the assigned proofs and I will answer any questions.

First period - remember, we are going to the National Geographic presentation, so if you have questions, make sure to arrive a little early.  We will meet in our regular room (307) and then head to the presentation from there.

Also, just a heads up, the quarter exam has been on the calendar for a bit, but if you haven't looked ahead, we will be testing on Wednesday, November 2nd.  The quarter exam will consist of mostly multiple choice questions with a small short-answer section.  We will have a formal review on the Tuesday prior to the exam.

Intro To Proofs

|

Proofs by Number

Today we will be learning how to structure proofs.  Click here to download the classwork (pages 1 - 2)!

Biconditionals & Tomorrow's Quiz

|

Period 6:

If you wanted to look over the biconditionals lecture from today, particularly the examples we had to skip over, you can find it here.

Tomorrow's Quiz:

The quiz will cover 2.1-2.3 and might have a biconditional on it, although the question format for that would be similar to what you have seen on the worksheet from today.

Make sure you have the worksheet from today completed and ready to turn in tomorrow!

Khan Academy Extra Credit

|

This is a reminder that there is an extra credit opportunity for Q1 in Khan Academy.  I have set up a class and sent everyone an invite to the class using your CPS emails.  If you didn't get an email to join the class, you can join the class using a pre-existing account on Khan Academy by follwing these instructions:
To join this class, your students should click their username at the top right, choose "Profile," and go to their profile's "Coaches" tab. There, they should enter your class code MQ5KUU under "Add a coach."
Once you have been added to the class, you should be able to complete the Algebra 1 course that is set up for the class.  Please let me know if you are having trouble setting up the account.  The last day to complete content for extra credit will be Wednesday, November 11th.

Homework Check #3

|

With homework check number 3 looming large in the future, I wanted to offer some advice for making sure that you have provided enough work.

The logic chapter can prove difficult to show work for, so below you can find some hints about what I will be looking for.

  • In general - if a problem asks you to determine if something is true or false, you should justify your answer.  This means providing an example or reason if it is true and providing a counter-example if it is false.  You should always attempt to do this, even if the instructions in the book do not ask you to.
  • If you are using inductive reasoning to predict the next term, you should describe the rule you are using.  This can be done algebraically or with a sentence.
  • Make sure to read the directions carefully and do all of the parts to a question.
  • I tend to model the work I expect to see when we do examples in class, so if you have taken good notes, you can look back for a reference of what I am expecting to see.
  • Here's a weird fact - a conditional statement is only false if the hypothesis is true and the conclusion is false.  Check out #21 in assignment 12.
Keep in mind that I am interested in seeing you support your answers, so I try to pick problems that have more work involved in them than just what is shown in the back of the book.

The 4th Rule

|

Please fill out this form with your fourth rule and a justification for why it would be a good addition in order to receive credit!

Inductive Reasoning and Nonsense Proofs

|

There were an awful lot of people out today, so I thought I would deliver the content to you!

Here's the powerpoint we went over today.  We did the first 11 slides.

After that, we played the nonsense proof game!  Read all of the directions carefully and I will let you in on a little secret - there are a couple of proofs that cannot be done.

There is also an assignment from the book on the class calendar, so make sure you've checked it out!

See you tomorrow!

Ch 12 Review Solutions

|

Here is a link to the Ch 12 Review solutions along with a bonus problem!

The solutions to the symmetry portion can be found here!

Monday 10/3

|

On Monday, we will be taking the BOY Exam.  This is an exam used to set a baseline for progress throughout the year, so there is no need to try and study for it.

I am required to give you the full period to complete the exam, but for many, the exam does not take the full period.  Consequently, you should bring something else to work on in case you complete the exam early.  I would recommend bringing your Geometry book and making sure your homework is completed for the upcoming homework check.

On an unrelated note, many of you have expressed that you did not have enough time to finish the quiz from Friday 9/23.  I am willing to offer students an additional 15 minutes after school on Monday and Tuesday, on a first come, first served basis from 3:25-3:40.  If you can't make either of these times you will need to set up an alternative before end-of-day on Monday.

I also wanted to remind you of the outstanding offer to complete the Algebra curriculum on Khan Academy for extra credit.  This opportunity will only be available up till 11/02, the week of the end of the first quarter (date may change depending on possible strike).  Don't miss out on this opportunity to brush up on some essential algebra and get a few extra points in the process!

Oh, and don't forget - I'm looking to collect the in-class work from Friday tomorrow.  Make sure to read all of the directions carefully!

9/27 Rotations - Classwork

|

You can find the practice problems for today at this link.  You are to complete the practice there and submit it by the end of the period.  Use your notes from yesterday as a reference for the coordinate rotations.

Apologies for the missing homework assignment yesterday, I put it on the wrong calendar.  You can find your current homework assignment on the class calendar.

12.3 Rotations

|

Access the 12.3 Rotations material here!

You do need to take notes (the first page) and then you should follow along with the instructions for performing a rotation on a separate sheet.  Remember to take care with measuring distances and angles in order to create a congruent image from the preimage.  You are to submit your work (not your notes) at the end of the period.  You should use approximately half a sheet per rotation.  Your assignment for the day is on the class calendar.

Today, we will be working on measuring segments.  Click here to access the webquest for further instructions!

Graphing Calculators

Some of you have not yet gotten your calculators for class. You will need one and I will not be able to lend them.

TARGET:  TI-83 Plus is $84.99; TI-Nspire CX is $129.99; TI-89 Titanium is $129.99; TI-30XIIS is $8.99

WalMart:  TI-84 Plus CE is $88.00; TI-84+ is $88.00; TI-83+ is $88.00; TI-30XIIS is $8.88; TI-30XS Multiview is $11.00; TI-34 Multiview is $15.00

STAPLES:  TI-84+ is $99.99 after rebate

OFFICE MAX/OFFICE DEPOT:  TI-84 Plus CE is $119.99; TI-84+ is $99.99

I highly recommend checking Ebay or Amazon, but make sure that the calculator you are buying WORKS!!  Many people sell broken calculators for parts so you should ask the vendor if the calculator functions properly.  I took the liberty of doing some precursory searches, and here are the links

TI-83 Ebay

TI-84 Ebay

TI-83 Amazon

TI-84 Amazon

On the ebay searches, you should be a cautious buyer. Email the vendor before placing a bid to inquire as to the condition of the calculator. Make sure it works!!  Check shipping costs and any type of return policy they might offer if the calculator does not work on arrival. Happy hunting!
